Here are 10 easy tips to make you a better Barista. Try them, you find they work!
1. Don't Rush! - People always make this mistake, new Baristas or experienced ones. Slow down, think about what your doing and concentrate on what you are doing. Your customer may get annoyed if they're waiting for ever, but I'm sure they'd rather wait and get a good cup off coffee than have you bang out a quicky to keep the line moving.
2. Keep Clean! - A clean Barista is a good barista. Keep yourself clean, you work surfaces clean, you equipment and tools clean. Even keep the floor clean. If you do this the quality of you coffee will shine! No one likes a grubby work station.
3. If its not right, do it again. - If you prepare a coffee and you are not happy with it, do it again. If you need to, apologies to the customer, explain that you are not happy serving the drink and you feel you can do better. This goes for pouring, steaming, frothing or any stage of preparing your drink. If its not right and your not happy, then do it again!
4. Smile! - You wouldn't believe how much if a difference this will make to your coffee! If you smile others will smile, if others smile then you feel happy. If your happy at work, you're gonna work hard and make sure you're doing you're best. So if you're doing your best because you're smiling then your customers are gonna have great coffee.
5. Be understanding - Not everyone knows about coffee like you do, they may not even know the difference between a cappuccino or a latte. So be understanding, ask them what they like, do they like strong coffee, foamy coffee, with or without milk? Big, small, hot, cold, healthy or indulgent. If you understand what they customer wants, then you can make it. If you assume and then make something they don't like or want, you probably wont see them again.
6. Do things in the right order - everything must be done in the right order when preparing drinks. You already know what order things should be done it, so maintain that skill and keep everything as fresh as possible, keep everything looking good and that way keep the customer happy!
7. Don't give up - Its never easy to do someone perfectly the first time round. So keep adjusting your grinder if you need to, keep practicing that latte art, keep trying the layered pattern. You'll get there in the get as long as you don't give up.
8. Sharpen the saw! - It doesn't matter how long you've been a barista or how good you think you are. There is a good change you could be better so go back over old stuff as well as new stuff, keep learning and keep advancing.
9. Bang & swirl! - You would be surprised by how many baristas don't do this enough or at all! Bang it, swirl it, do it as many times as you need to! Get your milk right. There is no point in having the best espresso in Europe if your milk is poo!
10. Have pride - This pretty much covers the above and much more. Above all else take pride in what you do. If you don't have pride in what you produce then either pull your socks up or don't bother at all. It will take effort but pride in your work and yourself shines through to your product, your staff and your clients!
