Question about extra terrestrial life?
I was wondering what the opinion of scientists were on this, I mean there is almost certainly life somewhere being that there are millions of rocky planets and there is still so much more we can't see. So if we were to define a life form as something that performs the biological process.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biological_process
Are there any theories as to what life would be like for presumably non carbon based organisms? Would they be parasitic? Would they have thinking capacity beyond what is included in the biological process? Would they have instincts similar to animals on earth? Would they have insticts at all? I guess I am mostly talking about organisms visible to the human eye but I suppose this could apply to microorganisms too. Before anyone ridicules me I don't claim to be an expert or even having a beyond high school knowledge of biology so please stick to answering the question as best you can with the way I phrased it and not criticizing me.
I am an MD. This is a serious question that is above ridicule among thinking people. The answer is that we simply don't know. However, here are a few facts that we do know:
1)The six most common elements in the Universe are in decreasing order: Hydrogen, Helium, Oxygen, Carbon, Neon, and Nitrogen, with 7th and 8th being Silicon and Iron. We are composed of 4 of the top six, or 5 of the top 8. Extraterrestrial life will likely follow in the same path. (Helium and Neon are Noble gases and do not combine chemically with anything).
2)The strongest bond between any two identical atoms is the Carbon-Carbon bond. This means that Carbon based life is the most viable, chemically. Silicon might be a distant runner-up, but rather unlikely.
3)Carbon and Silicon are the only common elements that can form up to 4 stable bonds with up to 4 other atoms. This makes these two capable of producing myriads of possible combinations. But Silicon-Silicon bonds are far weaker, making this possibility less viable.
4)Hydrogen and Oxygen are the two most common chemically reactive elements in the Universe. Liquid water will dissolve just about anything at least to a minimal degree. This makes it an ideal solvent for life.
Ok, so if all of this is true, why haven't we made contact yet with other life forms? At the moment, it appears that we are the only intelligent race in our Galaxy, since the others would have come by and visited us already. Only time will tell if we find other life out there. It has to be there, in my opinion. We just haven't found it yet.
