Plain tap water by itself is not a very good conductor of electricity, but saline water is an excellent conductor, and so are you. Human sweat is very salty, so when you're in the tub, you're basically creating your own saline bath as your sweat dissolves into the bath water (the effect, obviously, is intensified if you use bath salts). If you drop an appliance in with you while you're in the tub (highly not reccomended) you get zapped as the electricity seeks to ground itself (through you and to the metal drain). Interestingly, and of note, as the Mythbusters episode showed, the lethality of the shock you experience is diminished as the appliance is dropped closer to the drain. Just like with lightning strikes, the electrical charge is going to seek the most direct route to a grounded element. If the appliance is dropped behind you, the electricity is going to travel from your shoulders, down through all your vital organs and down to the drain through your toes. And that will likely kill you. If the appliance is dropped in front of you, you're still going to get a good zap, but it's not as likely to be a fatal one. In modern houses with modern electrical systems, the circuit breaker should quickly trip if something like this happens, so you're less likely to fry, but it's still going to hurt. A lot.
