I know years ago before sippy cups kids as young toddlers would drink from their own cup by themselves without a top. I've watched "Little House on the Prairie" & it is neat to see Carrie around age 3 with a "big girl" cup. I watched an episode yesterday & baby Grace had her own cup. She was around 2 I think.
I had some friends who did that with their kids too. One friend did it on a advise from her mom.
I had some friends who used "big kid" cups with no tops only when their kids were at the table or sitting in the kitchen. The big kid cups were not allowed out of the kitchen or dining room. Other times they had sippy cups.
My oldest daughter once went to a friends house when she was around 9. She came home mad and looking offended telling me "MOM! I had to use a sippy cup!" She told me at lunch the mom sat them at the table with sippy cups. The kids were ages 9, 7, 5 & 3. All were required to use sippy cups. I first made sure she wasn't rude about it and thankfully she accepted it without complaining but she didn't like it. I explained how every family is different and rules are different at each home.
We used sippy cups longer than some people. My kids stopped using them around 7 or 8. I didn't want spills on the carpet but that still happened even with sippy cups.
Also remember there are straw cups too. They too can be nonspill. My youngest two used those up until a few years ago. They are 11 & 9. They liked the straw cups and never complained.
Just decide what is best for your family. Do you mind your kids eating out of the kitchen? Can spills be cleaned up quickly plus without a lot of fussing from you or your husband? I know some parents freak out about spills. I try hard to take them as calm as possible. Kids will spill and make a mess. Even adults make messes so be prepared.
Or just teach the kids to keep their cups in the kitchen. If they want to drink they go to the kitchen, take a few sips then put the cup back up on the counter.
