do hermit crabs shed their claws?
i left my hermit crab in his tank and hes had fresh food in there for about 1 day and fresh water (if water from the fridge dispenser is fresh) and i even had salt water for him to bathe in and i leave a light on above him that keeps his tank warm and then i have water sprayed in there to keep it humid and his tanks floor is covered with sand and he also has a sponge to play with hes not that big may be about the size of a half dollar and i checked on him at about 8 in the morning today and he looked fine and about 2-3 hours later his claw was off of his body like 2-3 inches away from him i just got him a few days ago what happened to my hermit crab did he die or what please help thanks
the crab is stressed and may be dying ... and if you gave the hermit crab water with chlorine (like from your fridge door) that would be killing him slowly with the chlorine ... and a single hermit crab is never kept ... in the wild they travel in large colonies and feel safer when they have friends .... one crab in a tiny tank is stressed, stress leads to illness, illness to death ... and a light over the tank is wrong ... they require undertank heaters, bright lights are not a hermit crabs friend ... they need a day and night cycle but they do not like bright light ... and how are you maintaining the temperature and humidity ??? do you have gauges ??? or are you just hoping for the best ??? i would say if you just got him you should see if you can return him ... and before buying more hermit crabs google land hermit crab care so you can provide the next ones with a healthy environment ... i don't think your crab is dead but i do think there is something off in the environment for him to drop a limb and i also don't think he is going to live ...
"Most tap water has chlorine in it. This is harmful to hermit crabs, just as it is to fish in an aquarium. Water treatment drops can be purchased at a petstore. These are the same drops used to treat fish tanks, and are safe for your hermit crabs' water. The drops neutralize chlorine and heavy metals." DO NOT USE HERMIT CRAB WATER CONDITIONERS OR SALT SOAKS ...
"A hermit crab breathes by keeping its gills moist. If these gills gather chlorine deposits on them, the gills can become irritated and eventually swell. The crab can become sluggish and lethargic, due to lack of oxygen -- suffocation and eventually die."
"Losing legs is often related to stress from improper living conditions (temperatures, humidity, cleanliness), so if you have a hermit crab losing legs, you should rule out any problems in their environment."
hermit crabs can live over 30 years in the wild and over 15 years in captivity ... they are an exotic pet and require a specialized environment that is not cheap to set up ... once they are set up they are the most inexpensive pets ever but the initial investment is necessary to keep the crabs healthy and happy ...
