This article will show you how to make sinks and faucets sparkle and shine. Dazzling white porcelain and ultra-shiny metal really add the finishing touches to a kitchen or bathroom.
As a professional cleaner, I have found that finishing touches such as detailing sinks, bathtubs and appliances separate the truly professional house cleaners from the amateurs. Fortunately, it is not as hard as you may think to really clean a sink well.
First, I will discuss how to clean the porcelain bowl of the sink. The thing to realize about porcelain is that it is a semi-delicate surface. If the finish is still nice and glossy as it was when it was brand new, then you need to take care not to scratch it with steel scouring pads, steel wool and even green abrasive pads in some cases. Many people do not know about white abrasive pads. I would recommend using these pads for your sink, as they are made to clean porcelain and glass. (Now, if the surface of the porcelain is not shiny anymore, then it doesn't matter if you use green abrasive pads)
Furthermore, I would avoid using scouring powders such as Ajax, Comet, and so forth, as they contain abrasive particles that can erode the finish of the porcelain. What you will want to use most of the time is a mildly acidic cleaner such as vinegar or any liquid cleaner made to remove soap scum. Pour your acidic cleaner, and a little water if needed, onto your white scrub pad (you can get these from janitorial stores or online) and thoroughly scrub out the inside of the bowl. Next, rinse the bowl with warm water and then take a clean microfiber cloth and dry and buff the inside of the bowl. The microfiber cloth will really shine up the porcelain like nothing else can.
Next step: the metal faucet. Faucets are typically made from chrome or brass. They can be cleaned with just a microfiber cloth and some glass cleaner if smudged and lightly stained or with metal cleaner if tarnish is present. I, personally, would start out by cleaning it with a clean microfiber cloth., just buffing it, If that doesn't get it completely sparkling, then I would lightly dampen the microfiber with some glass cleaner. If the faucet isn't completely dazzling after this, you have a problem with tarnish, and/or staining. At this point, I would use a scrap of cotton (an old t-shirt or underwear will work great) and some Brasso metal cleaner or Bar Keepers Friend (both of which contain oxalic acid). Simply put a little Brasso or BKF paste onto your cleaning rag and evenly apply it to the faucet. After you have done this take a separate cloth or different section of your cloth and buff the faucet. Finally, take your microfiber cloth and give it a final buffing.
One final tip: Metal cleaner can create unpleasant fumes. I would recommend opening up a window, and/or using a fan.
