Do you think in her wildest dreams Betty Crocker would have known what to do with a
Z.Island Kitchen? What about a Toasterkettle? The truth is that as domestic a goddess as she was in her frilled apron and perfectly coiffed hair, Betty was pretty simple in the kitchen. A cake was a cake unless you really went wild and decorated it with those little silver balls in the icing. Pot roast was the standard then and a slow cooker meant your oven wasn’t working. She would have flipped over the Smart Oven that cooks any meal according to a “Smart Code” found on selected foods. Boy that really does sound high tech doesn’t it? You can be sure that it is the way of the future because we latch on to anything that makes our lives easier and sadly, faster. The Jetsons would feel right at home.
We all know that the kitchen is the center of any home. That is where the crowd gathers when you have guests over. It doesn’t seem to matter that you have a beautiful living room set for them to converse in, they end up in the kitchen with you. The kitchen, the master bedroom and the bathroom are the three things that will sell your home when you are ready to move. Invest in those three rooms and your profit will increase. Baking bread or cookies when you have people looking at your home also increases your chance of selling. The answer to why that is is easy. Those smells are a warm and fuzzy reminder of home. We didn’t have to have a mom like Betty Crocker who knew the answer to every cooking or baking dilemma and never had a soufflé fall, but the kitchen was where mom was.
I was told as a teenage girl to learn the art of cooking because our most important social interactions involve food. I didn’t really understand the connection until I got a little older. A romantic dinner for two helps those people build that relationship on a different level. The utter chaos of having the whole family gathered around a large table as mom brings in the Thanksgiving turkey reminds us all of how blessed we are to enjoy the food and that time together. When we take the time to stop running around and going our separate ways as a family, we often find soul searching confessions present themselves when we are sharing dinner with the kids.
It’s not the food itself that gets the credit as it honestly doesn’t matter if the meal is Lobster Thermador or macaroni and cheese because they will both bring about the interaction between us and the people who make up our lives. It is the art of breaking bread together that binds us together. It is a time for us as parents to teach our children about manners and being thankful for all we have. Family meals can teach our children traditions that they in turn can pass on to their children. For more information on those benefits visit http://www.mealsmatter.org
There are so many benefits of eating together that we have overlooked in our busy lives. Sure we want our kids to try other things like soccer and dance classes but are we giving them the place that should rightfully go to our mealtimes at home? I know I have been guilty of it too many times as we try to fit everything in. Modern technology has given us so many timesavers and yet not only do we work harder, but we are now available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through cell phones and Blackberrys.
Betty Crocker would roll over in her grave if she could see the way we live today and how seldom we eat together as a family. Her life was dedicated to sharing the perfect meal with her loved ones. Now thanks to smart kitchens and new fangled gadgets we have worked our ways further and further from that ideal. Ironic isn’t it? What if we each of us took up the challenge to put a little effort into dinners this week? Our families might be shocked and watch out for possible interventions, but let’s give it a try. Look up a new recipe or stay with an old one spread out on an actual table instead of the kitchen island and let’s make it a meal that we need to use cutlery for. I know it sounds crazy but why not give it a try? We don’t have to go cold turkey (pun intended) we can still use the modern convenience of the Internet and search out some ideas on sites like [http://www.canadian-cook.com]. Let’s rise to the occasion and make Betty proud!
Author’s note:
Betty Crocker never existed. She was a composite of many women in an effort to make a more personalize approach to helping cooks and bakers across America. For more info visit http://www.who2.com and type in Betty Crocker.
