Think of all the things that will cause you the greatest amount of stress in your life. Now write them down. The obvious ones are to do with death and divorce, followed by personal injury or illness, but, as I have been describing workplace stress in recent articles, note that number 8 on the scale of the Holmes-Rahe Life Stress Inventory is being fired at work. I'll explore some of the stresses which relate to job loss in my next article.
In this article, I want to outline the chief concepts of the stress inventory I mentioned above. The scale has been around for a long time and works on this simple concept: a listing of 43 life events likely to cause you stress with a stress weighting value for each item. These stressors include simple things that we don't often think about like changing our place of residence, changing fixed habits like smoking, a spouse retiring, and so on. Each of these 43 life events has a value ranging from 100 to 11 points, 100 being the most stressful and disturbing.
The scale requires you to list any of the 43 events that have occurred in the last 12 months and to total the value points of the events you listed. A score of 150 points or less is interpreted as "a relatively low amount of life change and a low susceptibility to stress-induced health breakdown." The scale goes on to show that a score between 150 and 300 points could mean a 50% chance of major health breakdown in the next two years. If you have 300 stress points or more during the last 12 months there is an 80% likelihood of a major health breakdown.
The death of a spouse is the highest stress carrying a mean value of 100 points. Interestingly, divorce and marital separations come next. These three events point to the very significant value of personal support. When people have someone connected with them who is interested in their well-being and cares for them, they experience what is called a stress buffer. This is a mechanism or process that reduces the amount of stress that affects people and, obviously, reduces the likelihood of a major health breakdown.
Some of the other stressors are not what you'd normally expect, for example, getting married rates as number seven on the scale. Clearly, the change in your circumstances, the commitment, the wedding itself, having to fashion new relationships with in-laws, and changing your lifestyle are all part and parcel of moving into the marriage state from being a single person.
Other more personal issues add stress to one's life too, for example, sexual difficulties, making new friends, going to grad school, changes in social activities just to mention a few. One of the constant factors in all of these stresses is transition and change. When people have to move out of a predictable and well-established routine of behaving in order to confront a new set of challenges, our system has to respond. There are increases in our physiological drive and neurochemical systems as well as our self talk activities.
Knowing something about personal stress or workplace stress provides an opportunity to prepare for the transition and change. If we also know the amount of stress likely to be related to a life event, this assists us in being able to deal with the change and the added pressure and tension. As I always say, change is inevitable and stress is inevitable but what is less likely and predictable is how willing we are to confront workplace and personal stress and how effective we are in employing good stress relief and stress reduction techniques.
Dr Jeff, a psychologist, writes about stress. In this article he describes how to measure stress. People need to learn how to manage stress and they need help to relieve stress. Dr Bailey integrates sound research with extensive clinical knowledge from his therapy with his patients. He works hard to make his articles practical and helpful but all of his articles are based on sound research evidence.
