If you like the old Bosch Universal Mixer you are going to love the new Bosch Universal Mixer Plus. Bosch has improved what many believed was the best stand mixer on the market. The biggest improvement is they increased the motor output from 700 to 800 watts of power. It now has 4 speeds with a pulse mode instead of 3 speeds. Many competitors feature as a many as 15 speeds. The truth is that the average person uses 3 to 4 speeds and ignores the rest.
Bosch Universal Mixer Plus Features
They kept the unique belt drive transmission that delivers consistent torque at low or high speeds.
A large capacity mixing bowl holds up to 6 quarts or 12 pounds of dough for bread or cookies
Some built in features that make this a superior stand mixer are the sealed transmission, the automatic overload shut off, and the ergonomic design.
Bosch warranties the unit for one full year on the complete machine and for 3 years on the motor and transmission.
Accessories & Attachments
Accessories included with the Mixer Plus are the dough hooks, French whisks or whips, 6 qt high capacity mixing bowl, splash ring, and lid. And a 6 cup blender attachment. The Plus mixer is compatible with all the previous attachments and accessories of the Bosch Universal Mixer. And boy, are there accessories. The universal mixer is a versatile all-in-one food processing center. Bosch has attachments for berry crushing, meat slicing, ice crushing, julienne, grating, and general food processing. Attachments or accessories for everything from juicing to sausage making are available for the Bosch Universal mixer as well as the universal plus.
One of the amazing things about this machine is that it can do all that it does and the basic unit only measures 12" Deep, 15.5" Wide, 10.6" High. It is a full size mixer and food processor that can fit comfortably in an apartment. Unlike some competitors whose full size stand mixers take up a significant part of the counter top and need a fair amount of room for the mixer to raise and lower into the bowl.
There is a down side to the Bosch Universal Mixer Plus. Like the old universal mixer the plus only comes in white for a color choice. White is a color that matches any decor. But, if you want a pink, blue or metallic gray stand mixer you are going to have to go with Kitchenaid.
Value versus Price
Bosch has a reputation for durability and dependability similar to the Maytag repair man. The average life of a Bosch universal mixer is 17 years according to one source. If you look at the average price of $400-$500 for one of these mixers and plan to keep it for at least 10 years that would make the cost of the mixer less than $5 per month. Yes, there are mixers that sell for a lot less. Chances are that you will be replacing them more often too.
Summary
Bosch improved an already great mixer and made it better. 800 watts of power, 4 speed transmission and a larger capacity bowl that can mix up to 12-15 pounds of bread or cookie dough are great features. If you own an older Bosch now is a good time to upgrade. If you are considering buying your first full featured stand mixer this one is a great choice.
