espresso :To pod or not to Pod that is the question?
OK I got offered a Great price on a espresso/ cappuccino maker it is 16 par High pressured,steam nozzle frother , 50 ounce water tank all the good stuff but its a pod machine and the brand of pods only can be ordered online I HEARD it also takes starbucks pods and some other brands. The pod slit is side ways so I cant really make my own pods and the perfect pod maker says it doesn't work on high pressured systems. It is really a good machine except for the pod part but i would be stuck with purchasing pods online or from the store.
On the other hand I was thinking about the moka express, Mukka express and the bialetti brikka before i was offered the other deal and maybe get a frother separate. What do you think I should do my budget is limited and I don't really like the electric machines I seen at the retail stores.
I just want some advice with someone who has one or the other
you'll probably ignore this advice, but anyway, here goes;
don't buy a cheap espresso machine. you will be disappointed and it will be in the bin.
then consider this possibility;
you can enjoy great coffee at home even with limited resources
the trick is to start with the coffee
visit your local coffee roaster, explain your situation & i am sure they will 1) agree & 2 ) help you
you see you need to get the foundation right, which is freshly roasted beans suitable for filter coffee prep (i can hear you poo-pooing filter coffee already; dont; filter coffee correctly prepared is great).
the marketing men have told you the great coffee means espresso. espresso is great & we love it, but a setup for a couple of hundred is not going to give you 'proper' espresso
to get started buy some freshly roasted beans, a cheap blade grinder, and i would recommend a Swissgold filter, but you can use a french press or indeed any coffee making equipment you already have
from a very small investment on some great fresh coffee & a cheap blade grinder you will find yourself drinking great coffee. Oh, and try it without milk or sugar first as these kill the delicate tastes in real coffee
you dont need an espresso machine to make great coffee.
put the money you would have spent on a cheap espresso machine towards saving for a proper machine and grinder, which will give you great espresso for years if properly used and maintained
