On an unexpected break from college classes the other day, I wandered into the local Starbucks. Faced with a bewildering array of choices, my head began to spin. Did I want a Frappuccino? A Cappuccino? Seasonal flavors like Pumpkin Spice or old favorites like Java Chip? Cream or no cream? What was a Frappucino, anyway? Twenty minutes later, I experienced a small thrill of accomplishment when I managed to decide on a Java Chip Frappuccino and Malorka sweetbread. Maybe Starbucks exists to teach people like me to make decisions.

Deciding on a type of Central Vacuum unit to purchase might put you into a similar tailspin. But you're in luck. With Starbucks, there are over 134,000 choices, and with central vacs, there are only three.

Choice #1: Cyclonic.

Cyclonic is the black coffee of central vacs. It's no nonsense power and it gets the job done with zero frills. You don't have to deal with bags or filters. Almost 100% of the dirt and debris are sucked into the dirt canister, and the minuscule particles are vented outside. Some of the dirt enters the motor, but it won't hurt the vacuum. Why? Cyclonic units have Star Trek-like technology called Amtek motors. Amtek motors are built to withstand dust in the motor fan chamber without harming the system. Besides the cool name, why should you get a Cyclonic? According to the website centralvacuumstores.com "the main advantage [is that they] maintain airflow because there is no filter or bag to restrict it." No restrictions equals 100% suction capacity.

Cyclonic Systems have one minor flaw. Maybe aliens aren't allergic to dust, but a lot of us Earthlings are. If you have dust allergies, don't get a Cyclonic or bagless unit. Even though true Cyclonics are a 100% dust free way to clean, emptying the dirt canister will expose you to dust. Move on to Choice #2 or #3.

Brand names for Cyclonic Units: Imperium, Vacu-Maid, and Vacuflo.

Choice #2: Filtered Units.

It's has a boring name, but don't ignore Filtered Units just yet. To revert back to our Starbucks analogy, these are the Tazo Tea drinks of the vacuum world. They are quiet but powerful. (You'll be happy to know that these units reduce odor, too.)

Filtered Units help eliminate any dirt that is not deposited into the dirt canister. Cyclonic Units vent the extra particles outside, while Filtered Units use (can you guess?) filters. Sometimes these units also use bags. Just like humans, vacuums are healthier when they're clean. Empty the bags when they're _ full for better suction power, and make sure to clean the filter often for a long lived vacuum.

And one more thing. It may not be a Harry Potter book, but the instruction manual is important. Read it. Don't just toss it in your desk drawer.

Brand names for Filtered Units: Imperium, Electrolux, Royal, Vacuflo, Beam, Hayden, Hoover, AirVac Red Series, Dust Care, and Nutone. (If you say them twenty times fast, we'll give you 50 cents. Especially for Electrolux.) Note: none of these units need outside venting.

Choice #3: Bag Units

Think Tazo Chai Tea Latte. These vacuums are similar to Filtered Units, but with a little extra spice. Unlike Filtered Units, Bag Units always have a bag in the dirt canister: you can depend on it. Like Filtered Units, they are quiet and smell sweet (kind of). Some of these units are perfect for people with dust allergies because they contain a throw-away bag -- you won't be exposed to dust (or disgusting food particles) when emptying the dirt canister. Remember: dirt is deposited directly into the bag, so be sure to empty it when it's full for better suction and a happier vacuum.

Brand names for Bag Units: Imperium, Nutone, Eureka, and AirVac.

The next time you walk into Starbucks, don't be overwhelmed by the thousands of choices. Just remember that choosing coffee is a training ground for important life decisions -- like choosing a central vacuum system.
