The control subjects were told to eat 4 capsules of 1 gram each. A study was done on the blood to see which caused the Omega 3 to be absorbed better into the blood stream.
The NIH study displayed that the emulsified supplement was absorbed faster into the blood, and also, to a further extent that the normal oil. This was measured 48 hours after the consumption of the oil. In this case, it was Coromega that was used in the study. The Emulsified fish oil was in a thick liquid, while the standard capsule was gelatin coated, which may have affected the results.
More studies need to be done to truly find out what differences emulsified oil have over the normal variety. Those studies also have to be done over a longer period of time. Nevertheless, this is an important study and it looks like emulsified fish oil did absorb better than standard fish oil over the 48 hour observation period.
