Please help! Do I need a kiln for my pottery?

Hi,

So for Christmas I wanted to hand paint a mug each for my mum and dad. I researched it, and found out that you could do this from home using an acrylic enamel paint, and that I wouldn't need a kiln, just an oven.

I went out to the pottery store and couldn't find "acrylic enamel paint" so I just asked the shop assistant what I would need to make some mugs at home, and he gave me a couple of bisque mugs, some under glaze coloured paints and a clear glaze and said that it would be everything I needed.

I've just been doing some more research and I've read that with what I have bought, I need to fire my mugs in a kiln after i have painted and glazed them.

Is this true!? Or can I just use my oven? I am really worried that I have just spent a lot of money on something that isn't going to work. The guy in the shop told me that this was what I needed to do it myself at home!? Please help me!

There may have been a misunderstanding about "at home"

Paint the mugs with the under-glazes let dry then apply the clear glaze avoid anything on the bottom foot that touches the table.

If you get anything on the foot wipe it off with a damp sponge or rag
Some places will coat everything and use stilts - I don't know the shop but you could ask them

Go back to the pottery shop and see how much they will charge you to fire the mugs
You could call the shop, explain the misunderstanding/ Ask about having your pieces fired or returning the supplies if you haven't used them.

I have known people to work on things at home then take things in to fire in a ceramic kiln
I will do the same but I start with the wet clay and need 2 firings one for bisque and one for glaze
