why are the coffee grinds going into my brewed espresso?
i bought a moka express pot. The grinds go into my espresso. A lot of the fine powder and a bit of smaller grinds, versus when I use my steam espresso machine there is only a tiny bit. I used espresso grind, and also regular grind, and there are still grinds ending up in my espresso. I've tried grinding my own and also buying store bought one. Why is this happening. I am using a medium high heat on an electric stove. It takes 7-8 minutes to brew from starting from a cold stove.
The problem is with the grind. It is not caused by the brewing time. The metallic filter in Moka pots lets a lot of fine grounds to go through. How much grounds ends up in your coffee depends on the way you grind the coffee. If you have a good burr grinder and grind the coffee only slightly more fine than for the drip coffee maker then there should be hardly any grounds going through the filter. However, if you have a blade grinder then there will be some fine grinds going through. The problem with the blade grinder is that it does not grind coffee evenly so you have a lot of fine powder. You can reduce the problem with the blade grinder by grinding the coffee in a short bursts (let the grinder run only for 5 - 10 seconds at a time) and shake the grinder after each burst. That way the grind will be less uneven and so there will not be as much of the fine powder that goes easily through the filter.
