When it comes to finding the cheapest ink and toner for your printer, you have a number of choices and it is good to understand the differences.
The first choice is called "new original" which is often also called OEM (original equipment manufacturer). These are brand name cartridges made by the same companies that make the printers. These are usually sold in office supply stores and even drug stores at anything from full retail to fairly decent discounts when "on special." You can also often find them on eBay, for example, at much lower prices than elsewhere because they have been purchased as overstock from retailers who needed to liquidate inventory or they are being purchased in bulk quantities and then sold at a very small markup, which is possible because of the low auction fees compared to the high overhead of maintaining a brick and mortar business. OEM ink cartridges are also often sold as "NIB" which means New In Box.
The next choice would be "compatible" ink cartridges that are "copy-cat" cartridges of the original equipment ink cartridges. These have been manufactured by third party vendors and are often produced in the same factory as the OEM ink cartridges but are being sold under a different brand name. Or they might be nothing more than cheap "knock-offs" so it is important to be careful when buying these types of printer ink cartridges. Another type of compatible cartridge is the refillable type which has been designed to be easily refillable without having to drill a hole in order to refill the cartridge with ink.
Another choice when looking for the cheapest ink is factory refilled cartridges. These are usually original equipment cartridges that have been refilled with ink and then are resold, usually at prices well below new cartridges which makes a lot of sense, considering the low cost of ink compared to the relatively high cost of manufacturing the plastic cartridges. Again, the quality of these refilled cartridges varies wildly and it is always a good idea to search for reviews to see what other people are saying about a particular brand.
The final choice for the cheapest ink is to buy your own refilling kit and do the refilling yourself. These kits always come with complete instructions as well as a small drilling tool that allows you to drill a hole into the original cartridge and then inject new ink into the empty cartridge. Obviously, these kits can be messy to use and you must be very careful as the inks are permanent and will stain almost anything they touch. However, with a bit of practice, the job of refilling cartridges becomes a very simple process and many home users who do a lot of printing use this as their preferred method.
