why do russians, canadians, americans, etc. think there is so much oil under the north pole?
all i ever learned in all my life was that petroleum is the result of great masses of carbon-based life falling down dead and rotting into the earth, then other layers of them falling down dead upon a new sediment layer, and so on, until there were so many dead carbon-based bodies rotting under such severe pressure that they formed oil.
why would there be oil reserves under the north polar ice cap? there never was a continent there, only sea water. i do not see how so many whales would simply fall dead into the ocean and not have their bodies eaten by sea scavengers that oil pits would be created.
so why are nations fighting over "rights" to oil reserves in the north pole region? what would make the oil?
if it is not oil, is it natural gas? what would make that? and how much of it would be there?
The answer to your question is plate tectonics. The area under the north pole has not always been located at the north pole.

During the Carboniferous (approx 350 million years ago) much of this area was near the equator. Greenland and even Alaska were equatorial land masses. A good example of how this works is that Prudhoe Bay on the North Slope of Alaska and one of the largest oil fields in the United States has oil that is generally believed to have originated in Triassic age shales, about 190 million years old. Beneath those rocks are Carboniferous age limestones that formed in a tropical marine setting. None of these rocks were deposited on a continent, but instead were deposited in a marine basin that through plate tectonics has been pushed all the way from the equator to the arctic. Many of these types of rocks extend far into the Arctic under the ocean.
Petroleum is the result of great masses of organic matter falling down and being buried. However, in most cases this only takes place in the ocean, and the organisms that are falling down are microscopic and near-microscopic size plankton and zooplankton (both plant and animal). Large bodies of animals and fish seldom are preserved and have almost no contribution to oil formation. In order for the deposits to eventually form oil, they must be deposited in an anoxic environment (meaning no oxygen present) so that they do NOT rot. As little as 1% of the resulting rock may be composed of these dead plants and animal bodies and it can still eventually generate oil. Bodies of whales would probably never become oil because they would rot, or be eaten by micro-organisms long before they had the chance to be preserved in bottom sediments (essentially mud).

USGS recently released an assessment that estimates gas and oil reserves of 237 Billion barrels are still undiscovered in the Arctic. That is believed by USGS to be 14% of the world's remaining undiscovered oil. For comparison, Saudi Arabia is believed to have 264 Billion barrels of oil.
