Have you wondered which is the best water purification technology for home use? This article will discuss the most widely-used methods of water purification in the United States, and give you some insight as to which is best for you and your family.
There are two main water purification technologies in broad use in the U.S. One very effective and economical type is the "Solid Block Activated Carbon", or "SBAC", or "Carbon Filtration" system. The other type of system that's in wide use is "Reverse Osmosis." Distillation and Ultraviolet Radiation systems, and a few others are sometimes used, but won't be considered here.
SBAC Systems
The better units using the SBAC water purification technology utilize several highly-compressed blocks of activated carbon. "Activated" simply means that the carbon is given a positive electrical charge. Contaminants in the water, which have a negative charge, will be attracted to the carbon particles and held there in a process called "adsorption."
A 1-pound carbon block, incredibly, can contain in excess of 150 acres, or 6 ½ million square feet of surface area. This surface area is made up of microscopic pores and tiny dead-end passages and other nooks and crannies, where the contaminants in the water get trapped. Other contaminants are removed from the water through the adsorption process, as explained above.
The best multi-stage SBAC systems will filter out virtually everything in the water that you would want removed. For example, they will remove about 99.99% of bacterial cysts that can cause severe, even deadly, intestinal upset. They also remove dirt and sediment, chlorine, lead, and most other contaminants.
One class of contaminants that's receiving more and more attention lately is "volatile organic compounds", or "VOCs". This is things like benzene, carbon tetrachloride, and all sorts of other chemicals that are breakdown products of oil and gasoline, some fertilizers and pesticides, some pharmaceuticals, etc.
The problem with VOCs is that they have very small molecules. The carbon filtration method of water purification removes VOC's, while the reverse osmosis water purification technology doesn't. (Reverse osmosis systems have to add carbon filtration to capture the VOCs, and not all of them do.)
SBAC systems are typically a good deal less expensive to purchase than reverse osmosis systems, and less expensive to operate.
Reverse Osmosis Systems
The reverse osmosis water purification technology was first developed as a method of removing the salt from seawater, to provide drinking water for submarine crews. The technology is really best-suited for industrial applications, but marketing folks figured out that they could make very small units for home use.
The process works by forcing water through a membrane that has pores just large enough to allow a water molecule to pass through, while filtering out anything with larger molecules.
There are several problems...
· It's a slow process, so a storage tank is required, unlike an SBAC unit.
· It wastes a lot of water, typically 3 to 10 gallons for every gallon purified.
· Because of the need for the extra carbon filters to capture the VOC's, the operating cost (replacing the membrane and filters, and the wasted water) is typically at least 2 1/2 times more than the operating cost of an SBAC unit.
· Reverse osmosis units filter out the minerals, like Calcium, Magnesium and Potassium that our bodies need, and that make water taste good. Worse than that, demineralized water is acidic, and isn't really good for drinking-it tends to pull the body's acid/alkaline balance to the acidic side. If the body's blood gets too acidic, it will leach minerals out of the bones to restore balance.
After research and consideration, I chose an SBAC unit to protect my family. Now I don't worry about water purification technology or contaminated water any more.
